Eligibility & verification

Benefits Commons only works if the room stays what it claims to be. This page explains who is eligible, who is not, and how we decide.

Eligible for full membership

  • In-house corporate or employer HR benefits and health & welfare professionals
  • Total rewards professionals who own or co-own benefits
  • Employee wellbeing leads
  • Leave, absence and disability professionals
  • Retirement, savings and pensions professionals on the employer side
  • Benefits administration and operations professionals
  • Verified public sector, higher education and nonprofit employer teams

Not eligible

  • Brokers and benefits consultants
  • Carriers, insurers and third-party administrators
  • Benefits technology vendors and platform providers
  • Sales, business development, partnerships and marketing roles targeting HR
  • Agencies and service providers selling into HR or benefits
  • Recruiters prospecting for clients or candidates

Professionals at consultancies who are doing genuine employer-side benefits work can request review and explain the situation in their application. These applications are always handled manually and are never approved automatically.

How we review

Review is a human judgement built on several weak signals rather than one strong one. A moderator considers:

  • A verified work email address that you can receive mail at
  • Consistency between that email domain and the employer you named
  • The role title and the responsibilities you described in your own words
  • Whether the organisation is an employer rather than a provider to employers

These always go to manual review, with no exceptions: public or personal email domains, unclear or missing employer affiliation, consultancy and vendor organisations, applications where the only supporting evidence is a LinkedIn link, and any conflict between what you told us and what we can see.

About LinkedIn

A LinkedIn profile link is optional and is treated as context only. We validate that the URL looks like a LinkedIn profile address and nothing more. There is no LinkedIn sign-in, no LinkedIn data connection, and no LinkedIn identity verification in this community. Do not share LinkedIn credentials with anyone, including us.

What the member badge means

A reviewed member badge means a Benefits Commons moderator read the application and judged the person to be an employer-side benefits professional. It is a community-reviewed professional status. It is not government identity verification, not an employment check, and not LinkedIn verification.

If you are declined

You will see the reason on your status page, and you can request reconsideration with additional context. Declines are often about missing information rather than a judgement about you.
